5 WAYS TO COMPLETELY “REVAMP” YOUR MENTEE

Have you ever bought anything from a thrift store? Or perhaps bought a piece of item that does not have much value, but you buy it because you recognize the potential it holds? Well, I have a couple of times. And guess what I do with it. I revamp it to the point where it becomes the best version of its original self. Did that catch you by surprise? I work to make it so much better that it becomes almost impossible to believe it was ever in the former state.

According to the Oxford Dictionary, “Revamp” means, the act of improving the form, structure or appearance of something. As a mentor, your primary purpose is to help your mentee become the best version of themselves both personally and professionally. Hard work is good, but imagine if you could work smart and achieve even better results as a mentor. Because I want you to be the absolute best mentor that you can be, here are five ways you can completely “revamp” your mentee.

Do the talk. As a mentor, you would find yourself giving a lot of advice, which is not a problem. However, it becomes a problem when you do not practice what you preach. The best way to help your mentee improve is not by talking alone; you need to act out what you say. Being a mentor automatically puts you in the position of a role model. You would be surprised by how much your mentee can pick up from your actions.

Little children, let us not love in word or talk, but in deed and in truth.

1 John 3:18

Share your experiences with them. Before getting to the point where an individual looks up to you, you must have passed through some tough times. Let your mentee understand that you are not a god or a superhero who gets everything perfectly. Share your experiences with them, the good, the bad and the ugly, doing this bolsters their confidence and gives them a sense of reassurance. Do this and watch your mentee transform.

Let them do things with you. Unfortunately, this particular point has been underrated. Very few mentors have been able to grasp the importance of carrying your mentee along in some of your activities. Every once in a while, invite them to that conference or meeting. This helps them see you in action in your zone. From your negotiating power to your conflict resolution skills, there is no limit to what your mentee can pick up by doing things with you.

Give them a platform. Nothing bests shapes up an individual than when you regularly give them opportunities to operate and showcase their capabilities. Allowing your mentee to perform informs them that you have confidence in them, and this pushes them to become even better; as they would not want to disappoint you.

Be genuinely interested in your mentee. As human beings, we crave attention. And at the slightest indication that we have the interest of someone, we are propelled to become better, at least for the accolades. As a mentor, you should tap into this tendency. Show genuine interest in your mentee; this would encourage them to become better, which will, in turn, motivate you to become an even better mentor.

Seeing your mentee become more refined than when they met you is the dream of every mentor. At the end of the relationship or some weeks/months down the line, you want to see a better version of the individual you are mentoring or mentored. Follow these ways and you will be amazed at the outcome. Good luck!

I hope you found this useful. Please share any other ways you might know. I would be anticipating in the comment section.
